Léon Mathot , born as Léon Désiré Joseph Tricnon , (born March 6, 1885 in Roubaix , France , † March 6, 1968 in Paris ) was a Belgian-French film actor and film director .

Live and act

Born in the French border town of Roubaix to Belgian parents, Léon Désiré Joseph Tricnon was renamed "Léon Mathot" on August 17, 1887. In Liège , his parents' hometown, he attended the conservatory and began to play theater in Lyon and Brussels. In 1906 Léon Mathot moved to Paris. There he made contact with the poorly developed cinematography and was employed by the film production company Pathé as an extra and small actor. In the years just before and during the First World War , he became a popular interpreter in French cinema. Mathot was used several times in film series, for example in 1917 as Count von Monte Christo in a film adaptation (1917/18) of the popular adventure material by Alexandre Dumas . During the war, director Abel Gance cast him several times.

From 1928 Léon Mathot largely turned his back on acting and from then on devoted himself to film direction, albeit without any of his productions ever achieving artistic significance. Mathot was last seen as an actor in 1939: In the propaganda drama “Deuxième Bureau contre Kommandantur”, Mathot played the main role of the clergyman Abbé Gaillard, who in 1917 for patriotic reasons hired himself out as an agent of the French in the fight against the German military. Léon Mathot's productions - literary adaptations, melodramas, anti-German pamphlets, adventure stories and dramas with an exotic background - have been completely forgotten today.

Léon Mathot was Vice President from 1938 to 1959 and President of the Cinémathèque française from 1959 to 1967 .
