Lê Hy Tông

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lê Hy Tông ( chữ Hán : 黎熙宗, * 1663 in Đông Kinh (Hanoi); † 1716 ibid) was the tenth Vietnamese emperor from the restored Lê dynasty . He sat on the throne from 1675 to 1705 and, like all monarchs of this line, was a puppet of the Trịnh princes who actually ruled .

Life

Before his accession to the throne, his name was Lê Duy Cáp or Lê Duy Hợp (more rarely Lê Duy Hiệp , depending on the reading of 黎維 祫). He was the youngest, posthumous son of the emperor Lê Thần Tông , who held office until his death in 1662. Since the three older brothers and predecessors Lê Chân Tông , Lê Huyền Tông and Lê Gia Tông died early and without children, the approximately twelve-year-old Lê Hy Tông was put on the throne by the ruler Trịnh Tạc in 1675 .

His era name (government motto ) was initially Vĩnh Trị and from 1680 then Chính Hòa .

Although the entire power of government was in the hands of Trịnh Căn , who had succeeded his father Trịnh Tạc in 1682, Emperor Lê Hy Tông nevertheless contributed to the improvement of the laws and social order, at least according to the traditional chronicles. Later he is said to have been regarded by the population as the best monarch of the restored Lê dynasty.

From 1703 there was a Trịnh internal power struggle for the succession of the aging Trịnh Căn, who at this time had appointed Trịnh Cương as the designated heir. The conflict also affected the imperial court. Presumably for this reason Trịnh Căn had the emperor deposed in 1705 after thirty years on the throne. He was succeeded by his eldest son Lê Dụ Tông ( Lê Duy Đường ). Lê Hy Tông lived until 1716 as "retired emperor". A younger son named Lê Duy Chúc later joined the rebellion of Lê Duy Mật against Trịnh supremacy.
