Lübeck Marzipan is an EU protected geographical designation of origin ( PGI ) for marzipan from the northern German city of Lübeck and the neighboring communities of Bad Schwartau and Stockelsdorf . The fact that the Lübeck marzipan manufacturers voluntarily adhere to certain quality principles (at least 70% raw marzipan mass , at most 30% sugar ) is not important for the protection of the term.

Marzipan in Lübeck

"Martzapaen" was first mentioned in 1530 in the Lübeck guild rolls. Lübeck's reputation as the “marzipan city”, its primary position in marzipan production, was established after 1800.

In 1786 the confectioner Johann Gerhard Maret founded his business. He died in 1804 and left behind a small son, so that his long-time journeyman Johann Georg Niederegger initially continued the pastry shop. In 1822 Peter August Maret took over the business and Niederegger founded his own company. In the following decades, around a dozen marzipan factories were founded in Lübeck, which laid the foundation for today's global spread of sweets.

Lübeck marzipan is also available from Niederegger from the manufacturers Erasmi & Carstens , Lubeca , Johannes Heinr. Martens GmbH & Co. KG, Marzipan-Land, Mest-Marzipan GmbH and Lubs.
