The magazine has been published since 1952; every six months since 1991. The historical model was the Maćica Serbska magazine ( Časopis Maćicy Serbskeje ) , which was published from 1848 to 1937. The articles are mainly written in Upper Sorbian , Lower Sorbian , German but also in Russian , Polish , Czech and other languages. Lětopis informs its readers about research and results from the Sorbian-Wendish language and culture, taking historical and current results into account. The magazine is an indispensable medium for Sorbian intellectuals, but outsiders who are interested in Sorbian affairs also use it to learn more about the Sorbs and their history and current situation.

In the GDR , three independent volumes have been published once a year since 1952 in the A, B and C series. Series A dealt with Sorbian linguistics ; Row B dealt with topics about history , with a focus on political and economic history and relations with the German majority population. The politics of nationalities in capitalism and socialism were also dealt with in series B. Series C reported on topics of folklore and thus provided information on customs, traditions, folk art and folk music. From 1986 to 1991 a fourth series (D) was published on topics in cultural and art studies . Music, visual arts and literature found their place in this.
