Lammert Bouke van der Meer (* 1945 in Leeuwarden , Friesland ) is a Dutch classical archaeologist specializing in etruscology . Van der Meer is a leading authority on Etruscan religion .

Life

Van der Meer studied Classical Antiquity and Classical Archeology at the University of Groningen . He wrote his dissertation on the Etruscan urns from Volterra . Later he was professor of classical archeology at the University of Leiden .

Van der Meer published several books and numerous articles on Etruscan bronze mirrors with mythological scenes, the Agramer mummy bandage , Etruscan sarcophagi and the Etruscan collection in the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden . In 1983 he published a volume for the Netherlands on the Corpus Speculorum Etruscorum , an international research project for the publication of all preserved Etruscan bronze mirrors.

He made a significant contribution to the reading and interpretation of the bronze liver of Piacenza in 1987 in his work The Bronze Liver of Piacenza. Analysis of a polytheistic structure that takes into account almost all epigraphic , literary and archaeological sources. He also researched the use of travertine and the Domus Fulminata in Ostia Antica . His monograph Ostia speaks. Inscriptions, buildings and spaces in Rome's main port was published in 2012.

Van der Meer is a member of the Istituto Nazionale di Studi Etruschi ed Italici , the International Scientific Committee for the Corpus Speculorum Etruscorum and the Editorial Committee of Bulletin Antieke Beschaving . He is also one of the editors of the archaeological journal BABESCH .

Van der Meer is now retired and is currently working on bronze mirrors from the 4th century BC. Chr.
