The L. Kellenberger & Co. AG is an internationally operating Swiss manufacturer of high-precision grinding machines, based in St. Gallen and is among the world's leading suppliers of precision cylindrical grinding machines.

Kellenberger specializes in the development and production of numerically controlled precision grinding machines and systems of the middle and top technology level. Kellenberger has been part of the American company Hardinge since 1995 and had a turnover of 120 million Swiss francs in 2008 .

The company manufactures universal and cylindrical grinding machines for external and internal cylindrical grinding of small and medium-sized workpieces. These are used in the precision production of prototypes as well as small, medium and large series in the mechanical engineering, tool and mold making, automotive and electrical industry, hydraulics, aerospace, precision industry, tool industry.

Company history

In 1917 Leonhard Kellenberger founded a mechanical workshop for the production of grinding machines in St. Gallen . In 1918 L. Kellenberger & Compagnie brought the first in-house developed universal grinding machine onto the market, in 1920 the first surface grinding machine and a special grinding machine for overhauling automobile engines, in 1922 the first crankshaft grinding machine. In 1960 Kellenberger specialized in universal cylindrical grinding machines. 1995 L Kellenberger was taken over by the American company Hardinge. In 2009, 65 of the 400 jobs, 240 of which were located in St. Gallen and 160 in Biel, were cut. The turnover was between 100 and 110 million Swiss Francs. In 2010, Kellenberger took over the British company Jones & Shipman.

Kellenberger is now the management company in the Hardinge Grinding Group, which includes Voumard, Hauser, Tschudin and Usach as well as the English grinding machine manufacturer Jones & Shipman. The Hardinge Group, based in Elmira (USA), is the world's largest manufacturer of spindle tools.
