The LAW T47 internal combustion engine operated by Kleinbahn Leer – Aurich – Wittmund was converted from a passenger car into a tow car by the company's workshop . The vehicle was used by the Kleinbahn until the end of operations in 1967 and scrapped in 1972.

History and description of the vehicle

In order to make freight traffic more profitable, the Leer – Aurich – Wittmund railway needed a powerful vehicle, as the existing diesel locomotives could not handle the roll-headed traffic . A four-axle passenger car, which was built by the Herbrand wagon factory in 1899 , was turned into a tow car in the Aurich workshop in 1955/56 .

The car body was shortened and a large sliding door was installed in the middle of the car as access to the loading area and the driver's cabs. The railcar received a diesel engine from Büssing with a differential converter transmission , which was built in underfloor construction. The bogies of the donor car were exchanged for two single axles. A raised pulling and buffing device in standard gauge design enabled trains with jacked up standard gauge vehicles to be transported without intermediate cars . In addition, the railcar also had the balancing lever coupling common to the railway company . The car was equipped with an air brake .

At first the railcar was painted ivory above and red below, the last few years the car body was green, the roof light gray.

commitment

The use of the railcar began in 1957. During its twelve years of operation, the car was economical in operation and could transport up to eight jacked up standard gauge cars.

The mileage was between 20,000 and 25,000 kilometers per year because the LAW D 12 intended for these services did not particularly prove itself in operation. When LAW D 8 took over most of the freight traffic in 1967, the T47 was used on the section from Esens to Aurich due to its lower weight .

After the line was closed, it was used for the dismantling train and carried the last train in 1969. After the decommissioning, the vehicle should be sold. But there was no buyer for the car, so it was scrapped in 1972.
