La Catedral

La Catedral was a three-acre country estate that Pablo Escobar used as a private prison from June 19, 1991 until his escape on July 22, 1992. It is located a few kilometers above Envigado in the hills.

construction

Escobar bought the property in the late 1980s. During the negotiations with the Colombian government in the spring of 1991, construction of the prison began. A barbed wire fence about six meters high surrounded the property, in which there were nine watchtowers. In addition, the prison had one-story accommodation rooms with six communal cells and six individual cells, each with their own bathroom, in which 70 inmates could be accommodated. There was a disco, billiards and fitness rooms for leisure activities. In addition, there was a soccer field and a waterfall on the property.

On June 19, 1991, Escobar took a helicopter to La Catedral to begin his sentence. Escobar was the only prisoner and had brought his own bodyguards. His family members visited him regularly, as friends, professional football players or prostitutes were able to do at his invitation.

After Escobar resisted being transferred to another prison, he fled on July 22, 1992 from advancing security forces into the hills behind La Catedral .

Use from 2007

After La Catedral was abandoned as a prison, the furniture was looted and the property fell into disrepair.

The Benedictine order "Monastica Santa Gertrudis" built a chapel , accommodation, library and cafeteria on the property from 2007 . He received the land from the community and built an old people's and nursing home.

reception

In the US drama series Narcos , the 9th episode of the first season with the title "La Catedral" shows the stay of Pablo Escobar in his prison.
