La Cocarde tricolore

La Cocarde tricolore (with the full title La Cocarde tricolore, episode de la guerre d'Alger , German The three-colored cockade , episode of the Algerian War ) is a comedy by the brothers Charles-Théodore and Jean-Hippolyte Cogniard .

The name refers to the French tricolor that became the flag of France after the French Revolution .

The three-act play deals in a satirical and caricaturing manner with the beginning of the colonization of Algeria by France , which began on June 14, 1830 with the landing of French troops off Algiers . It is written in vaudeville style , with vocal interludes. A "hero" of comedy, Nicolas Chauvin , may have a. a song whose refrain begins with the words: "Je suis Français, je suis Chauvin, je tape sur le bedouin" (in German, for example: "I am French, I am Chauvin, I hit the Beduin ").

The first performance on March 19, 1831 in the Théâtre des Folies-Dramatiques (Paris) was a success and the play was performed repeatedly until 1860, the song mentioned was a hit of the time. In 1835 it was published in bound form by Bezou, Paris.
