René Portocarrero

René Portocarrero (born February 24, 1912 in Cerro , Havana , † April 7, 1985 in Havana) was a Cuban painter, illustrator and ceramist .

life and work

In 1924 René Portocarrero studied at the Villate Academy and for a short time at the San Alejandro Academy . He left academic teaching and worked independently. This was followed by trips to Europe, Haiti and the USA and numerous exhibitions, e.g. B. at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York. In 1950 he worked on ceramics with Wifredo Lam , Amelia Peléaz, Mariano and Martinez Pedro in the village of Santiago de las Vegas.

In 1961 he and Fidel Castro took part in discussions on culture in the José Marti National Library . Portocarrero had a seat at UNESCO , was in contact with Peggy Guggenheim and worked for the Japanese Women's Association. In 1979 he designed the official poster for the Year of the Child on behalf of UNESCO . In the 1980s he taught Victor Miquel Moreno Piñeiro.

Exhibitions and prizes

René Portocarrero received various prizes and honors, including the order "Félix Varela" 1st stage, named after the Catholic priest and independence fighter Félix Varela (1788-1853), by the State Council of the Republic of Cuba and the highest award given abroad in Mexico , the order from the Aztec eagle (Águila Azteca). His works can be found in the international collections of many museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York , the "Museu de Arte Contemporânea" in São Paulo , the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris , and the "Pan American Union" in Washington , the “Museo de Arte Moderno” in Buenos Aires and in private collections.
