Basic plan

The Tumulus La Hogue (also Tumulus de la Hoguette) discovered in Fontenay-le-Marmion in 1896 is located south of Caen in the Calvados department in Normandy in France . The once eight to ten meter high chalk hill is almost rectangular with a bulge on one long side. It is about 49.0 m long and 37.0 m wide and contains 12 round burial chambers, 11 of which can be reached through covered passages.

La Hogue dates from around 3600 BC. And was already excavated in 1829 by Arcisse de Caumont (1801–1873), the "father of Norman archeology". The facility was placed under monument protection in 1905. The corridors and chambers made of dry masonry contained human bones, which were preserved by the high lime content in the soil. One of the chambers had an altar-like construction made of panels.

The tumulus of La Hoguette, which was named after the La Hoguette group , was only 600 m away and was a smaller version of La Hogue, but no longer exists. It contained seven or eight chambers with 12 complete skeletons. Six were provided with corridors.

Complete bodies were buried in some passage graves in Normandy. This also applies to the monuments of La Hoguette, La Hogue and La Bruyère du Hamel in Condé-sur-Ifs. Since some were excavated in the 19th century, the information is somewhat general in nature. Although these mounds contain several passage graves, they were conceived as a single architectural and structural project. According to Chambon, their plan and the arrangement of the chambers as well as the type of burials indicate that the number of people to be buried may have been fixed at the time of construction.
