La Princesse is a 13 meter long, 37-ton mechanical spider that of the French designed artist François Delarozière and the performance project La Machine from Nantes was built.

It was first presented during the European Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008 in Liverpool , England, where it roamed the city from September 3rd to 7th. The machine made of steel and poplar wood was controlled by 12 people; the total cost of the project was £ 1.5 million.

Other objects can be seen in the exhibition project Les Machines de l'île, founded by François Delarozière and Pierre Orefice, in a warehouse in the port of Nantes. Delarozière, together with La Machine , an association of artists , engineers and craftsmen , transformed the “imaginary worlds” of Jules Verne , Leonardo da Vinci and the industrial history of Nantes into large, mechanical objects. So far, the sculptures The Great Elephant (Le Grand Eléphant), The Marine Worlds Carrousel (Carrousel des mondes marins) and The Heron Tree (L'Arbre aux Hérons) have been created. The objects can be viewed publicly in the warehouse (like in a museum ).
