action

A traveling merchant wants to sell his goods to people, and two police officers ask him to leave the place. When he escapes them, the policemen sit exhausted and tired on a bench and go to sleep.

There he glues the sleeves of their jackets together and rudely wakes them up. In doing so, they become the mockery of all passers-by who watch the spectacle with amusement. The dealer is finally caught by the police and taped to a door. When they free him from the door again, he is the trickiest and has to cover himself with a newspaper smeared with glue.

Background information

Georges Méliès presents this slapstick film without elaborate film tricks, which are often referred to as his trademark. This film is an attempt to keep up with the burgeoning slapstick film industry from Hollywood and to play with this genre.
