Laba Sosseh

Laba Badara Sosseh (born March 12, 1943 in Bathurst , † September 20, 2007 in Dakar , Senegal ) was a Senegambian salsa musician .

Life

Laba Sosseh was born in the capital of the later West African state of Gambia. His father was Senegalese and his mother was Gambian. In the early 1960s he went to Dakar, Senegal, and in 1966 took part in the 1st World Music and Arts Festival, where he was a celebrated musician. Sosseh was fluent in Spanish, Creole, and several Cuban dialects. Inspired by Cuban music of the 1940s and 1950s, he sang salsa music and played with Ibra Kassel , a later founding member of the Super Etoile de Dakar , in various clubs in Dakar and in the region. For a while he was a member of the Star Band du Dakar group .

In 1990 he, who is dubbed the “King of African Salsa”, was the first African artist to be honored in Havana , Cuba for his musical work with “The Gold Disc” .

Sosseh died in September 2007 at the age of 64 after a long illness in a private clinic in Dakar.
