Laboratory Unit for Computer Assisted Surgery (LUCAS) is a system that allows planning of an osteotomy on the computer. LUCAS has been developed since 1998 at the University of Regensburg with the support of Carl Zeiss Oberkochen. The surgical plan can be reproduced on the patient using a navigation system . LUCAS is based on the same platform as the Surgical Segment Navigator (SSN), Surgical Tool Navigator (STN), the Surgical Microscope Navigator (SMN) and the Multi-Coordinate Manipulator (MKM) from Carl Zeiss .

Workflow

A CT or MRT image data set from individual two-dimensional slices is loaded onto LUCAS. The image data is processed to remove image noise , to emphasize edges and to enhance contrast . Then the individual two-dimensional CT slices are put together to form a three-dimensional model on the computer. The bone segment to be repositioned is marked in a grid model. The segment is moved to LUCAS until it is correct; Criteria for the correct position of a bone segment can be a symmetry comparison or the measurement of the orbital volume . A textured representation of the segment shift osteotomy is also possible. The vectors for the spatial segment offset are then transferred to the Surgical Segment Navigator together with the image data set .
