The Lac Nichicun is a lake in the administrative region Nord-du-Québec of the Canadian province of Quebec .
Lac Nichicun is located approximately 200 km northeast of Lac Mistassini in central Labrador . The lake is in the area of the Canadian Shield at an altitude of 500 m . Lac Nichicun is divided into many side bays by the large island of La Grande Île in the middle of the lake . The lake area is 272 km². The Rivière Nichicun flows from Lac Artigny to the east towards the lake. The large neighboring lake Lac Naococane to the east is also drained via the Rivière Nichicun. Lac Nichicun itself is considered the "source" of La Grande Rivière , which leaves the lake on its north bank and flows to James Bay .
On the north shore of the lake is Nitchequon , a former trading post that has been abandoned.
The name of the lake is derived from the Cree word for otter .
