Lactuca acanthifolia is a plant from the genus lettuce ( Lactuca ) within the family of Compositae (Asteraceae). A synonym is Scariola acanthifolia (Willd.) Soják .
features
Lactuca acanthifolia is a perennial stem hemicryptophyte that reaches heights of 30 to 100 centimeters. The stem is strong and fleshy. In its leaf axils it is spider-like and woolly. The stem leaves are short falling. The lower leaves are large, more or less pinnate and petiolate. On the underside of the midrib, they are spider-like and woolly. The cups are arranged individually or a few sitting on rod-shaped branches. The fruits are 9 to 10.5 millimeters in size and matt yellowish-brown.
The flowering period extends from July to September.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.
Occurrence
Lactuca acanthifolia occurs in the southern Aegean, in Crete, Turkey and Greece. The species grows on shady limestone walls. In Crete it is found at altitudes from 0 to 800 meters.
