Lacus Hiemalis - Latin for winter lake - is a frozen lava lake on the moon . The name was established by the International Astronomical Union in 1976.
The small mare area has an average diameter of 50 kilometers and is located on the moon side facing the earth at the selenographic coordinates 15 degrees north and 14 degrees east.
The lake is surrounded in the north-west by Lacus Gaudii , in the west by Lacus Lenitatis and in the north-east by the 14 km wide Daubrée crater, the bottom of which has also been flooded by lava. To the northeast, on the edge of the Mare Serenitatis, is the Menelaus crater with a diameter of 27 kilometers.
