The USS Taylor (FFG-50) is a frigate of the US Navy and is one of Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate on. It was named after Commander Jesse J. Taylor , a naval aviator who was shot down in an attack on North Vietnamese territory during the Vietnam War . The ship was sold to Taiwan in 2017 and has been named PFG-1115 Ming Chuan ( 銘傳 ) since then .

history

FFG-50 was commissioned in 1982 and laid down at Bath Iron Works in May 1983 . After six months the frigate was launched and was christened. On December 1, 1984, the Taylor was put into service.

The ship's first missions were in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, in 1990 the Taylor took part in Operation Desert Shield , and in 1992 in Operation Southern Watch . In the following years several deployments followed, partly as part of the Standing Naval Force Mediterranean of NATO .

The frigate was relocated in 2005 as part of the fight against global terrorism , and in 2006 it was part of the Joint Caribbean Lion 2006 exercise , where it sailed with the aircraft carrier USS George Washington . In August 2008 the Taylor drove with Almirante Juan de Borbón and ORP Gen. K. Pulaski and Lübeck in the Black Sea an exercise. In September 2010 the frigate was in Murmansk to take part in celebrations for the end of World War II. After it left again, it was overflown on September 10 by a Russian Tupolev Tu-95 or Ilyushin Il-38 aircraft at a height of around 30 meters and 50 meters to the side. The following day two Kamow Ka-27 helicopters flew over the Taylor at a height of 30 meters and 30 meters to the side.

On January 8, 2014, the USS Taylor left Naval Station Mayport for her final assignment in the 5th and 6th Fleets. On February 5th, the USS Taylor received the order to go to Sochi with the USS Mount Whitney to support the US athletes in the 2014 Winter Olympics . On February 12, she ran aground in the port of Samsun, Turkey, rendering her unable to maneuver. There was little damage and no one was injured. Still, Navy Cdr. Dennis Volpe released from his command. On May 8, it was finally shut down and taken to Taiwan for scrapping. The USS Taylor (FFG-50) joined the Taiwanese Navy on May 13, 2017 in Taiwan as Mingchuan . It is used there with the Fengchia (formerly USS Gary FFG-51) as a submarine hunter .
