Lacus Lenitatis - Latin for lake of gentleness - is a frozen lava lake on the moon , which is similar to the larger Maria in terms of its origin . The name was established by the International Astronomical Union in 1976.
The small sea area has a mean diameter of 80 kilometers and is located on the Earth-facing side of the moon between the Mare Serenitatis and the Mare Vaporum at the selenographic coordinates 14.0 degrees north and 12.0 degrees east.
In the immediate vicinity of the lake lies Lacus Doloris in the northwest , Lacus Gaudii in the north and Lacus Hiemalis in the east . A little west of the lake in front of the Mare Vaporum is the 39-kilometer-wide Manilius crater.
