geography

The lake is located a few kilometers southwest of the city center of Tarija and can be reached from there in a few minutes by microbus or car. One of the few bike paths in the province also leads directly to the dam on the lake. Its extent in the southwest-northeast direction is about 3 kilometers, the width on average about 400 to 800 meters. The lake is fed by several small rivers, which have their origins primarily in the Cordillera de Sama . The drainage takes place in a south-easterly, then easterly direction into the Río Nuevo Guadalquivir . The catchment area of the Río Camacho connects to the south of the body of water and connects to the Guadalquivir about 10 kilometers further southeast.

Significance for the region

As part of the major project “Proyecto Múltiple de San Jacinto” from 2015, the state power grid operator ENDE and the Department of Tarija jointly operate a hydropower plant with two Francis turbines and a total of 8 megawatts of power.

The lake's water is also an important freshwater reservoir for the provinces of Cercado and Avilés . Although it is considered to be relatively heavily contaminated, it is used to irrigate agricultural areas, to extinguish forest fires and in some cases also to supply the residents with drinking water. There are also public fish farming programs and an associated tree nursery.

The reservoir is practically not used for swimming. Guests can only be brought to the center of the lake and back with small rowing boats. Nevertheless, it is a popular destination and suggestions for further increasing the tourist attractiveness are regularly discussed. Simple restaurants offer fish dishes, crabs and chirreadas (corn-based crêpes ).

The exhibition grounds are also located on the east bank. Once a year, the large industrial and trade exhibition ExpoSur (also called FexpoSur ) takes place there, to which local and national music and show stars are invited for evening concerts and performances.
