The Lago de Sanabria is one of the largest natural lakes in Spain and the only major ice age glacier lake in the country.
location
The lake, which is almost 3.5 square kilometers in size and a maximum of 53 meters deep, is located at an altitude of around 1000 meters in the municipality of Galende in the northwest of the province of Zamora . The most important inflow and outflow is the Río Tera .
Natural park
On October 27, 1978, the Parque Natural del Lago de Sanabria y Alrededores National Park was established in the area of the lake with a park area of 223.65 km². Nevertheless, the lake has developed into a popular holiday destination in the region, which is not without negative effects in the entire field of ecology (→ Weblink).
Others
Since 2011, operates on the lake, a wind- and solar-powered excursion catamaran ( Helios Cousteau ) whose transparent plexiglass floor diverse observations of flora and fauna allowed.
Attractions
- The former Cistercian - Kloster San Martin de Castañeda is located approximately one kilometer north of the lake. The information center of the Natural Park ( Centro de Interpretación del Parque ) is located here today .
- About 18 kilometers southeast of the lake is the lovely town of Puebla de Sanabria , whose medieval-looking town center is a listed building as the Conjunto histórico-artístico .
