history
A parish church in Senapría is mentioned for the first time in the 7th century, i.e. in Visigothic times. Following the Islamic conquest (conquista) in the 8th, the Christian reconquest ( reconquista ) of the areas north of the Río Duero in the 9th and 10th centuries. A document from the late 10th century mentions a town called Urbs Senabrie , but a castle (castillo) is only documented for the year 1132. Alfonso IX endowed the place with municipal privileges ( fueros ) in 1220 .
In the 15th century, power over Puebla was in the hands of various counts, including those of Benavente , who built the castle. It was gradually expanded into a border fortress.
During the Spanish War of Independence , Portuguese troops under Francisco da Silveira Pinto da Fonseca Teixeira (1763-1821), supported by Spanish units, captured the fortress of Sanabria on August 20, 1810, previously taken by the French under General Jean Mathieu Seras . When the French garrison surrendered, they had to surrender their aigle de drapeau , a shameful admission of defeat.
