Sanzoles is a place and a municipality ( municipio ) with 492 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the province of Zamora in the autonomous community of Castile and León in northwestern Spain .
location
The place Sanzoles is located in the seemingly endless agricultural landscape of the Iberian Meseta at an altitude of about 720 m . The distance to the provincial capital Zamora is almost 20 km (driving distance) in a north-westerly direction. The climate in winter is quite cold, but in summer it is warm to hot; the sparse rainfalls (approx. 365 mm / year) fall over the whole year.

The mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting loss of jobs in the countryside have led to a persistent population decline since the middle of the 20th century.
economy
The area around Sanzoles is largely agricultural ; the place itself functioned as a regional service center for trade, handicrafts and services of all kinds. Viticulture has long played an important role in the economic life of the community.
history
No finds are known from the Celtic , Roman , Visigothic and even Moorish times. The place was probably recaptured by the Christians ( reconquista ) as early as the year 900 and settled by Christians from southern Spain ( mozárabes ) . The first written mention of the place name comes from the year 1290. From the year 1594 comes a document, through which a dispute between citizens and pastors about the tithe (diezmo) was settled.
Attractions
- The Iglesia de San Zoilo is dedicated to St. Zoilus of Córdoba and was built - probably on the site of a previous building - at the beginning of the 18th century. The west facade is elevated by a bell gable (espadaña) , the sides of which are decorated with ornamental obelisks with balls or stone vases. A baroque altarpiece (retablo) is the gem of the single-nave church.
- At the beginning of the 21st century, an iron monument in honor of El Zangarrón in the form of a mask head was erected in the square south of the church .
- The town hall (ayuntamiento) is housed in an old city palace from the 16th century.
- On the central square of the town is a fountain with attached drinking trough (Abrevadero) .
- There are numerous rock cellars ( bodegas ) on the outskirts .
Culture
The mask festival in honor of Zangarrón , which takes place on December 26th, is a regionally significant carnival-like event that has to do with the "expulsion of the winter spirits".
