Peñausende is a municipality in the province of Zamora , which belongs to the autonomous region of Castile-Leon in Spain . The place is in the comarca Sayago . Peñausende includes the suburbs Figueruela de Sayago, Peñausende and Tamame. The municipality is located about 250 km northwest of Madrid .

In Peñausende, the remains of a castle of the Order of Santiago , which played an important role during the Reconquista, have been preserved . The castle rock is a popular lookout point.

The parish church dedicated to St. Martin of Tours is now the most important building in the town. It was built between the 11th and 13th centuries and shows the transition from Romanesque to Gothic . It was rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries.
