Corrales del Vino is a place and a northern Spanish municipality ( municipio ) with 961 inhabitants (at January 1, 2019) in the province of Zamora in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon . The place was located on the ancient trade route Via de la Plata , which now forms a branch of the Camino de Santiago that comes from the south ( Seville , Mérida , Cáceres , Salamanca ) and joins the main route at León or Astorga .

Location and climate

The place Corrales del Vino is located on the Castilian plateau (meseta) in the south of the province of Zamora at an altitude of about 770 to 800  m . The provincial capital Zamora , located on the Río Duero , is about 18 km (driving distance) to the north. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 385 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

The significant population decline since the 1950s is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms and the associated loss of jobs. The municipality also includes the two hamlets (pedanias) Fuente el Carnero and Peleas de Arriba .

economy

Agriculture (especially livestock, wine and vegetable growing) traditionally plays the largest role in the municipality's economic life. In addition, the place functioned as a trade, craft and service center for the villages and hamlets in the region as early as the Middle Ages. Income from tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes (casas rurales) has increased over the last few decades.

history

Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and even Moorish traces have not yet been discovered. The area around Corrales was recaptured by the Moors at the end of the 11th century ( reconquista ) , but it was not until the end of the 13th century that a Romanesque church was built, of which the portal is still preserved. According to local tradition, the later King Ferdinand III. born in 1199 in the hamlet of Peleas de Arriba .

  • The St. Maria Magdalena parish church has a Romanesque west portal with richly decorated archivolts . The whole south side engaging porch ( portico ) is a work of Renaissance . The three-aisled interior houses a Romanesque stone mother of God and two wooden crucifixes from the 14th century (Cristo del Miserere and Cristo Corralino) . The carved and painted altarpiece is a work of the 18th century.
  • The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias chapel from the 18th century stands by the cemetery .
Surroundings
  • The Iglesia de San Esteban of the hamlet of Fuente el Carnero is a single- late Romanesque building with a Renaissance - bell tower (espadaña) in the West, but one - richly decorated for the North West of Spain - portal on the north side. The single-nave interior houses several vegetable capitals , and there is also a round window with an unusual decoration . The church is recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural .
  • The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción , which was built around the middle of the 18th century and has a bell gable (espadaña) , is located in the hamlet of Peleas de Arriba . Its neoclassical main altar dates from 1791.
  • In the place Peleas de Arriba supposedly the later King Ferdinand III. to be born; In his honor, a single-arched monument was erected in the 19th century.
