Arrabalde is a northern Spanish town and municipality ( municipio ) with 216 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the province of Zamora in the autonomous community of Castile-León .

location

Arrabalde is located on the banks of the Eria River at an altitude of about 775 meters above sea level. d. M. The distance to Benavente is about 24 kilometers (driving distance) in a south-easterly direction; the city of Astorga is about 50 kilometers northwest.

In the 19th century the population of the community was mostly well over 1,000 people. However, due to the mechanization of agriculture , jobs were lacking, which drove the rural exodus.

economy

Until the middle of the 20th century, most of the community's residents lived on farming and livestock farming as self-sufficient farmers . In the last decades of the 20th century, hunting and fishing tourism was added as a source of income; in addition, many vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( casas rurales ).

history

The remains of a megalithic stone grave from around 3500 to 4000 BC can be found in the municipality . Chr .; Another important grave find comes from the Celtic or Celtiberian times. Romans, Visigoths and Moors were probably also in the area, but left only scant archaeological traces. The parish church dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. Century.

  • The Casetón de los Moros called Dolmen is located approximately one kilometer north of the town. The capstones and the mound of earth above ( tumulus ) have long since disappeared; only five orthostats in the burial chamber are original, the other stones were added based on the excavation findings. As usual, the corridor faces southeast, i.e. in the direction of sunrise at the time of the winter solstice . The monument is one of the few testimonies from the time of the megalithic cultures in the province of Zamora; the others are also found in the Carpurias Hills.
  • The fortified settlement of Castro de Las Labradas , located about one kilometer southwest of the town, dates from the Celtic period (approx. 600 to 150 BC) . In 1980 and 1988 excavations were carried out there, during which a gilded bronze brooch came to light. It is now in the Museo de Zamora in Zamora .
  • The parish church ( Iglesia de San Salvador ) is a 15th or 16th century building made of rubble stones. It has a semicircular windowless apse , a bell gable ( espadaña ) accessible via a stone staircase and an open vestibule supported by wooden pillars ( portico ) on the north side.
