Granja de Moreruela is a town in northern Spain and the capital of a municipality (municipio) with 277 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019 ) in the province of Zamora in the autonomous Spanish region of Castile-León . Granja de Moreruela is located on one of the South ( Seville , Mérida , Cáceres , Salamanca and Zamora ) and coming in Leon or Astorga of the opening into the main line branch line Camino de Santiago .
Location and climate
The place Granja de Moreruela is located in the Meseta about 38 km (driving distance) north of the provincial capital Zamora at about 730 m altitude on a rocky hill about 2 km east of the river Esla . The winter temperatures are quite cool, whereas in summer it is warm to hot; the sparse rainfalls (approx. 42560 mm / year) fall throughout the year with the exception of the summer months.

The significant population decline since the 1950s is essentially due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lack of jobs in rural areas ( rural exodus ).

history
Prehistoric rock carvings have been discovered in the municipality. Although the place was under its old name Santa Eugenia on the Via de la Plata , which was already in use in antiquity , Celtic, Roman, Visigoth and even Moorish traces have not yet been found. In 1143 the Cistercian order founded the Moreruela monastery just 2 km west of the village ; Probably there was an economic enterprise of the monastery or a storage barn ( granja ) in or near the place .
