The Lake Monate is a in the Italian region of Lombardy ( province of Varese situated) glacier pre-Alpine origin.

geography

With a size of 2.5 km² and a depth of 41 meters, it is nestled between Lake Maggiore , Lake Varese and Lake Comabbio in a slightly elevated position in the middle of a gentle hilly landscape. The Lago di Months is fed by underground springs and has only a few above-ground tributaries, one of which is the Rio Freddo in the municipality of Osmate. In the village of Travedona, the Lago di Months drains through its only drain, the Torrente Acquanegra, into the Lago Maggiore, which is 73 m below.

The localities on the Lagomonth are Cadrezzate , Comabbio , Osmate and Travedona -month .

The location of the lake and the fact that a large part of the shore property is in private hands have contributed to the fact that the Lago di Months has remained a preferred and clean bathing lake to this day. Therefore, many bathers cavort in the beach baths set up for this purpose in the summer months. Pedal boating and canoeing are particularly popular. Sailing and windsurfing are allowed, but motor boating is prohibited.

On large sections of the shore, reed belts and densely overgrown forest areas alternate.

history

Fishing used to be the main source of income for the population of the surrounding towns. The fishing rights were bought for the first time in 1652 by the Milanese aristocratic Biglia family, who sold them to Duke Pompeo Litta Arese in 1783. In the 19th century they were passed on to the Borghi family (who had previously acquired the rights to Lake Comabbio).

In 1898 Pio Borghi introduced fishing with modern criteria of breeding and selection, with rainbow trout, freshwater perch and whitefish being bred.

In 1864, remains of pile dwellings sunken in the lake were discovered, two larger ones in the village of Cadrezzate and one in months. Objects made of stone and bronze, various ceramic utensils, cut stone axes, parts of looms and the remains of three dugout canoes were discovered. The wood of the same came from a single large tree, the age of which was 2500 BC. Was dated. Roman gravestones and a votive tablet dedicated to the god Jupiter have been excavated in the surrounding villages of Travedona -months, Osmate and Comabbio.
