The Laguna Lagunillas is a lake on the northeastern edge of the Cordillera de los Frailes in the Oruro department in Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The outflowless lake is located in the eastern part of the barren plateau of the Bolivian Altiplano and is framed by mountain peaks that rise to a height of more than 4500 m. The lake is at an altitude of 4114  m and has an area of ​​about sixty hectares , which, however, is subject to fluctuations depending on the precipitation and the season. The lake has a high salt content due to the lack of runoff.

The climate is cool and dry because of the inland location and is characterized by a typical daytime climate, in which the mean temperature fluctuations between day and night are usually significantly greater than the seasonal temperature fluctuations.

The average annual temperature in the region is 4 ° C and varies between 0 ° C in June and July and 6 ° C from November to January. The annual precipitation is only 350 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 15 mm, and significant precipitation only from December to March with 60 to 80 mm monthly precipitation.

The largest town is Lagunillas with 576 inhabitants (2012 census), other small towns are Quihuori , Puncuni , Jankhara and Paculla . The Río Pampa Rancho , the upper reaches of the Río Pilcomayo, flows through the valley south of the Laguna Lagunillas .
