Laima Vaikule (* 31 March 1954 in Cesis , Latvian SSR , Soviet Union ) is an on the territory of the former USSR popular Latvian pop - and Estrada singer and actress. Her best-known songs are Vernissage , Charlie and Jeschtscho ne wetscher (German: it's not evening yet ).

When Laima Vaikule was three years old, her parents moved to Riga . Laima Vaikule showed an interest in music and choreography at an early age. At the age of 12, she entered a competition for young singers and was discovered. Between 1970 and 1973 she studied medicine in Riga and planned to become a surgeon. At the same time, she played music with a band with whom she performed in local clubs and restaurants. In the early 1980s she studied acting and directing at the Russian Academy for Theater Arts (GITIS) in Moscow .

In 1985 Laima Vaikule landed her first hit in the Soviet Union. From 1986 she worked very successfully with the Latvian composer Raimonds Pauls and the Russian text writer Ilja Resnik . Hits like Vernissage , Charlie and Skripatsch na krysche (German: violinist on the roof ) emerged. Laima Vaikule was one of the founders of the annual pop music festival in Jūrmala . In the 1980s and 1990s she was a regular participant in international music competitions and festivals across Europe. Among other things, she received the golden lira from Bratislavská Lýra, 87 , received awards from Jurmala 92 and took part in the AU music world in Monaco . In her homeland she bears the title of People's Artist of Latvia.

On August 2, 2011, Laima Vaikule was awarded the Russian Order of Friendship for her artistic services to Russian-Latvian relations .

Laima Vaikule currently lives and works in Riga and Moscow. She sings mostly in Russian .
