Laith A. Jawad

Laith Abd Jalil Jawad (* 31 May 1948 in Basra ), as Laith Abdul Jalil Jawad Al-Hassan is known, an Iraqi -neuseeländischer marine biologist , in New Zealand and Oman works.

Life

Laith Jawad is the son of Abdul Jalil Jawad and Sabeha Hassan. In 1971 he obtained a Bachelor of Science from the University of Basra and in 1980 graduated with a thesis Intraspecific variation in the common goby, Pomatoschistus microps from the University of Bristol with a Master of Science in fish taxonomy . From 1980 to 1983 he was a lecturer and from 1983 to 1993 he was assistant professor at the University of Basra. From 1993 to 1994 he was a research fellow at the University of Sanaa in Yemen . From 1994 to 1997 he was an assistant professor at Benghazi University in Libya . In 1997 he emigrated to New Zealand.

From 1980 to 1982 and from 1984 to 1985 he was head of the fish department at the Center for Marine Research at the University of Basra. From 1997 to 2003 Jawad was Research Assistant at the University of Auckland and from 2003 to 2005 Laboratory Manager at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington , New Zealand. From 2006 to 2008 he was a research fellow at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in Auckland . From 2008 to 2012 he worked as an expert and consultant on fish biodiversity at the Center for Marine Research and Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Muscat , Oman. Since 2013 he has been working as a freelance consultant for aquatic biodiversity in Auckland.

Jawad wrote over 330 research articles and book reviews that were published in various international journals as well as the first descriptions of the genus Matanui , the ray species Okamejei pita (in collaboration with the German ichthyologist Ronald Fricke ) from the northwestern region of the Persian Gulf , and the lyre fish species Callionymus omanensis (with Ronald Fricke) as well as the Umberfisch species Johnius majan from the waters around Oman.

In 1988 he co-authored the publication A bibliography of the fishes of the Tigris-Euphrates-basin alongside Brian Coad , which was also published in German under the title Bibliography of the Fish of the Euphrates-Tigris Basin . In 2016 he contributed five chapters to the book Coastal Fishes: Habitat, Behavior and Conservation by Edward K. Martinez. In October 2017 Jawad published the book Dangerous Fishes of the Eastern and Southern Arabian Peninsula and in July 2018 the book Field Atlas to the Fishes of the Arabian sea cost of Oman .

Jawad is married and has three daughters.
