Lajos Lesznai

Lajos Lesznai (born December 6, 1904 in Budapest , † November 17, 1977 there ) was a Hungarian musicologist .

Life

Lesznai studied composition with Miklós Laurisin from 1925 to 1929. In 1925 he joined the Hungarian labor movement and in 1928 became a member of the Hungarian communist party KMP. In the 1930s he was arrested and interned several times for his political activities. In prison he dealt with philosophy and aesthetics . During this time he wrote Zene és társadalom ( Music and Society ), but the manuscript was lost. After the war he worked from 1945 to 1948 as a lecturer at the Szikra Könyvkiadó publishing house . This was followed by three years at the Ministry of Defense. From 1952 to 1956 he was an editor at the music publisher Zeneműkiadó Vállalat . From 1956 until his retirement he worked as a lecturer at the Institute for Popular Education.

Since 1945 he has published numerous musicological articles and studies, including in the magazines Új Zenei Szemle , Magyar Zene , Parlando , Studia Musicologica and Music and Society . In his two most important works, published in 1956 and 1961, Lesznai dedicated himself to the life and work of the composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Béla Bartók .

In addition to his musicological activity, he was involved in the Esperanto movement and was a participant in the Esperanto World Congress in Madrid in 1968 .
