The Lake Albert is a freshwater lake in the southern Australian state of South Australia . The lake to the south of Adelaide is connected to the larger Lake Alexandrina by the natural channel The Narrows . The Narrung peninsula separates it from the saltwater lake Coorong in the southwest. The only settlement on the lake is the town of Meningie on the southeast bank.
The lake was named after Albert von Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha , the husband of Queen Victoria .
Since there are no tributaries worth mentioning, but a high evaporation rate, the water of Lake Albert has a higher salinity than that of Lake Alexandrina. Lake Albert is also smaller and not as deep as Lake Alexandrina.
In 2008, the water level in both lakes sank so much that large amounts of sulfuric acid soil were formed, because sulfur compounds normally bound on the lake bed turn into sulfuric acid with the oxygen in the air as soon as the lake bed is dry. Some people have wanted to flood the lakes with seawater to stop acidification, and there is a dispute between the Murray River states over how to divide the dwindling amount of water.
The pH in Lake Albert was recently measured at 1.93, a value that indicates strong acidity and is very dangerous.
