Lake Buchanan is the reservoir of the dam Buchanan Dam on the Colorado River in the US state of Texas . It is located in Burnet County and Llano County , west of Burnet . The original name of the project was Hamilton Dam and Reservoir , but was later renamed in honor of the Texas US Representative and Congressman James P. Buchanan .

General

Lake Buchanan was the first of a total of six barrage projects on the Colorado River to be initiated by the Lower Colorado River Authority to generate electricity from hydroelectric power stations, and which is now known as the Texas Highland Lakes . It is also the largest of the six lakes with an area of almost 94 km².

Leisure & recreation

In order to turn this area into a recreational area and to make their leisure activities more attractive for fishing enthusiasts, various types of fish were released in large quantities. The most common species that can be caught here are sea bass , catfish , largemouth bass and sun bass . Besides, the lake is a wintering area for the critically endangered bald eagles with an approximate population of 25.

Most of the real estate around Lake Buchanan is privately owned. A number of houses and holiday huts around the lake are rented out to tourists. The Lower Colorado River Authority also maintains three parks in the area. These are:

Canyon of the Eagles

In close proximity to the lake, in the Texas Hill Country , is the region's oldest winery; the Fall Creek Winery .

history

Work on Buchanan Dam began in April 1931 but was suspended in April 1932. In 1935 the project was continued. The project was completed in 1938, but in 1937 the damming had already begun.
