The East Leichhardt Dam is a reservoir in the northwest of the Australian state of Queensland . It used to be called Lake Mary Kathleen . The name goes back to the Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt . The reservoir is located on the Leichhardt River East Branch , about 25 km east of Mount Isa and about 9 km south of the Barkly Highway . It begins below the confluence of Brumby Creek .
It was actually supposed to serve as an emergency water heater for the Mary Kathleen uranium mine , which has since been abandoned. However, it turned out that the Corella reservoir was sufficient for these purposes .
