particularities |
The lake rotoehu is the smallest of a chain of three lakes northeast of Lake Rotorua on the North Island of New Zealand . It lies between the cities of Rotorua and Whakatāne . The lake is fed underground by Lake Rotoma in the east and flows west into the adjacent Lake Rotoiti .
The southern end of the lake is part of the Okataina Caldera . The lake was formed during the Rotoma eruption around 8,500 years ago.
The lake is little used for tourism, recreational opportunities include kayaking and fishing for rainbow trout . Access is via the Otautu Bay and Kennedy Bay residential areas on the lake. The critically endangered Kokako lives near the lake .
Since the 1960s, an increased nutrient content was determined by the entry of the surrounding agriculture into the lake. Algal blooms by cyanobacteria have occurred almost every year since 1993 . The nutrient input is to be reduced through an action plan.
