The Lake Rotopounamu even Greenstone Lake called, is a lake in Waikato on the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

In the Māori language, the name of the lake is composed of the words " roto " for "lake" and " pounamu " for "jade" .

geography

The Lake Rotopounamu is 7.5 km south of Lake Taupo and 6 km southwest of the city Turangi . Adjacent to the west, only 1.25 km away, is the much larger Lake Rotoaria . The 1.3 × 1.05 km lake can be reached via New Zealand State Highway 47 and a 20-minute hike from the highway parking lot . The 1326  m high Pihanga rises southeast of the lake .

Nature reserve

The Lake Rotopounamu is part of Tongariro National Park and is under the care of the Department of Conservation (DOC). There is a 5 km long hiking trail around the lake that takes two hours. On the 20-minute walk to the lake, the DOC created a nature trail, on which the various trees along the way are described with display boards.

In the forests around the lake, birds such as the North Island Robin , a species of flycatcher , the kākā , the Maori fruit pigeon , known locally as the kererū , and hawks can be found.
