Lalka Berberova

Lalka Stojanowa Berberowa ( Bulgarian Лалка Стоянова Берберова ; born June 11, 1965 in Plovdiv ; † July 24, 2006 ibid) was a Bulgarian rower who won an Olympic silver medal in 1988.

The 1.82 m tall Lalka Berberowa took fifth place in the two-man category without a helmsman at the Junior World Championships in 1983 . At the 1983 World Championships in the adult class, she finished sixth with the Bulgarian eighth . Two years later she started at the 1985 World Championships together with Teodora Zarewa in a two-man without a helmsman and also took sixth place in this boat class. At the 1986 World Championships , Berberova rowed in a foursome with a helmsman and came in fifth.

Together with Radka Stojanowa , who was also there in 1986 in a four with a helmsman, Berberova entered the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul in a two with no helmsman. In the second heat, the Bulgarians crossed the finish line six seconds behind the Romanians Rodica Arba and Olga Homeghi in second place. In the hope race, the Bulgarians won ahead of the US boat and thus made it to the final. The two Romanians won the final with over three and a half seconds ahead of the Bulgarians, another three and a half seconds behind the boat from New Zealand won the bronze medal.

At the World Rowing Championships in 1989 Berberova competed in two boat classes and twice reached the finals. In the four with a helmsman , the Bulgarians took fifth place, with eight they came fourth. After a two-year break, she also competed in two boat classes at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. She took ninth place with the four without a helmsman and with the double four .

Berberova died in Plovdiv in June 2006 after a brief illness at the age of 40.
