Lambert Kelchtermans

Lambert Kelchtermans (born September 10, 1929 in Peer , Flanders , Belgium ) is a former politician of the Christelijke People's Party (CVP) , long-time mayor and member of both chambers of the Federal Parliament and briefly President of the Senate .

biography

After attending school, he studied at the Sociale Hogeschool in Heverlee and then worked as a social assistant. Immediately thereafter, from 1952 to 1956, he was secretary for North Limburg at the Christian trade union Algemeen Christelijk Vakverbond (ACV). After that he was ACV Central Secretary for Chemistry and Energy for the Province of Limburg until 1961.

In 1961 he began his political career by being elected to the Chamber of Deputies . There he represented the interests of the CVP until 1985. From 1979 to 1982 he was first deputy chairman and then until 1985 chairman of the committee for work and social affairs ( Kamercommissie Arbeid en Sociale Zaken ).

In addition, he was involved in local politics for many years as a member of the council of his place of residence Neerpelt . First he was there from 1965 to 1969 alderman ( Schepen ), then from 1969 to 1993 mayor ( Burgemeester ) of the community.

In 1985 he was elected senator . He held this position until 1995. Between May 16 and October 10, 1988 Kelchtermans is also President of the Senate ( Voorzitter van de Senaat ). During his membership in the Senate, he was also head of the Belgian delegation to the North Atlantic Council between 1986 and 1995 , where he was also a member of the Defense and Security Committee. He was also a member of the Benelux Inter-Parliamentary Council from 1976 to 1988 and chairman of its Social Security Committee between 1989 and 1995.
