Ian Kiru Karan was born in the small town of Point Pedro in the far north of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka ) when Ceylon was still a British crown colony . His mother died during his birth, which was performed by caesarean section . Three years later - in August 1942 - his father died as an Aircraftman 2nd Class (equivalent to a soldier in the Air Force ) of the Royal Indian Air Force in North Africa during World War II . He left university without a degree and worked for the English branch of the logistics company Schenker .

In 1970 Karan went to Hamburg, where he briefly worked as a dishwasher. There he continued to work in the logistics industry and founded his first company in 1975, Clou Container , which he sold in the mid-1990s. In 1996 he founded the company capital lease , in 2007 the market for leasing of containers with half a million TEU was eighth in the world. In 2007 he sold the company he ran to a fund launched by DVB Bank , and Textainer took over the operational business . Karan kept Capital Intermodal GmbH , which should concentrate on the business with special containers. Karan has consolidated his financial activities and associated companies in CLOU Container Leasing GmbH . In the 2008 financial year, CLOU Container Leasing had a turnover of 32 million euros and a balance sheet value of 101 million euros. Karan is married and has four children.

On August 25, 2010, Karan was elected as successor to Axel Gedaschko into the office of Hamburg Senator for Economic Affairs in the Senate of Ahlhaus . Shortly before his election, he told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung that he had fondled several details of his biography in the past. For example, the reason for dropping out at the London School of Economics was not his commitment to the Vietnam War , but rather high absenteeism. After the break of the black-green regional coalition and the early general election in February 2011, Karan resigned from the Senate on March 7, 2011.
