Ernst Weiß (born September 14, 1911 in Hamburg ; † March 6, 1998 ) was a German politician ( SPD ) and long-standing social senator in the Hamburg parliament .

life and work

Weiß grew up in simple circumstances in the Hamburg working class district of Hammerbrook . At 16 he joined the Socialist Workers Youth and was soon elected chairman there. In 1930, at the age of 19, he joined the SPD. He was a master painter by profession.

After persecution under National Socialist rule, he represented the SPD in the Hamburg citizenship from August 18, 1948 to 1982. From the constitutional amendment on February 19, 1971 to June 28, 1978, his mandate was suspended because he was a member of the Senate . From 1957 to 1978 he was a member of the Senate as President of the Authority for Labor and Social Affairs. This made him the longest serving senator in the Hanseatic city .

In 1968, Ernst Weiß was also elected chairman of the SPD district Hamburg-Nord , the second largest of the seven SPD districts in Hamburg. His executive committee was made up of prominent members, including Hans Apel , Peter Schulz , Hilde Ollenhauer , Hans-Ulrich Klose and Fiete Dethlefs . Ernst Weiß held the office until 1974.

As a senator, he was successfully involved in the creation of numerous social institutions in the Hanseatic city. After leaving the state government in 1978, he was awarded the Mayor Stolten Medal , Hamburg's highest honor after honorary citizenship. The Ernst-Weiß-Haus in Hamburg-Wandsbek was named after him. It is a home with a garden that is specially equipped for blind seniors.
