Lampris australensis (English: Southern Spotted Opah) is a species of fish from the genus of the god salmon ( Lampris ), which occurs in the seas of the southern hemisphere. There is evidence of the species from the coasts of Australia, Chile, South Africa and Tasmania. It was onlydescribedas adifferent speciesfrom Lampris guttatus in 2018, after a study based on DNA comparisons from 2014 revealed thatfive cryptic species were hiddenbehind the name Lampris guttatus .

features

Like all divine salmon, Lampris australensis is a large fish with an approximately round, laterally flattened body. The type specimens examined in the first description had standard lengths of 53.8, 67.3 and 86 cm, with the body length being 1.3 to 1.45 times the body height. The fish are colored steel blue and show numerous almost round white or silvery spots, often up to the tip of the dorsal fin. The fins are bright red. The rear edges of the unpaired fins (dorsal, anal and caudal fin) are whitish or yellowish. The scales are small, thin, and easily fall off. The sideline begins at the upper gill slit, then runs in a high arc above the base of the pectoral fin and then along the middle of the body to the middle of the caudal peduncle. The mouth is strongly protruding (protractile). The upper jaw is shorter than the slightly protruding lower jaw. The jaw and palate are toothless. Also pharyngeal teeth are missing. Of all god salmon, Lampris australensis has the largest pupils and the highest dorsal fin. The back line is clearly concave in front of the dorsal fin.

  • Fin formula : dorsal I / 50–52, anal 40–42, pectoral 22–23, ventral 13–15.
