Lampris guttatus (English: North Atlantic Opah) is a species of fish from the genus of god salmon ( Lampris ), which occurs in the eastern Atlantic, in the Irish Sea , in the North Sea and in the Mediterranean. The species wasfirst describedin 1788 by the Danish zoologist Morten Thrane Brünnich as Zeus guttatus , i.e. assigned tothe St. Peter's fish . The description was based on a specimen caught in the North Sea. The Swedish naturalist Anders Jahan Retzius introduced the genus Lampris for the speciesas early as 1799. With the exception of the Lampris immaculatus described in 1904, all other divine salmon species described below were latersynonymouswith Lampris guttatus . An almost worldwide distribution of the species was assumed. However, a2014 study basedon DNA comparisons revealed thatfive cryptic species were hiddenbehind the name Lampris guttatus . Therefore,in a revision of the genuspublished in April 2018, Lampris lauta became an independent species that canbe differentiatedfrom Lampris guttatus , and three other species of salmon were newly described.

features

Like all divine salmon, Lampris guttatus is a large fish with an approximately round, laterally flattened body. The type specimens examined in the new description had a standard length of 97 and 100.5 cm, with the body length being 1.5 to 1.8 times the body height. The fish are colored silvery gray, the back is metallic blue. The body is covered with numerous white spots. The spots come in two different sizes, with the larger ones being concentrated on the sidelines . There are few spots on the head, chest and gill cover. The fins are deep red to pink in color. The scales are small and thin and easily fall off. The sideline begins at the upper gill slit, then runs in a high arc above the base of the pectoral fin and then along the middle of the body to the middle of the tail peduncle. The mouth is strongly protruding (protractile). The upper jaw is shorter than the slightly protruding lower jaw. The jaw and palate are toothless. Also pharyngeal teeth are missing.

  • Fins formula : dorsal I / 47–51, anal 40, pectoral 23–25, ventral 14.
