Lampris lauta (English: East Atlantic Opah) is a species of god salmon ( Lampris ) that occurs in the eastern Atlantic ( Azores and Canary Islands ) and the Mediterranean. The species wasfirst describedin 1860 by the English naturalist Richard Thomas Lowe , but was latersynonymouswith Lampris guttatus . It was not until a revision of the genus Lampris published in April 2018that Lampris lauta became an independentspeciesagain, distinguishable from Lampris guttatus , after a study based on DNA comparisons in 2014 revealed thatfive cryptic species were named Lampris guttatus hid. It should be higher back than Lampris guttatus and have a larger horizontal eye diameter.

features

Like all god salmon, Lampris lauta is a large fish with an approximately round body that is flattened at the side. The neotype examined in the new description has a standard length of 90.5 cm, the body length being 1.5 times the body height. The fish are uniformly colored silver-gray. The head, the entire body and the anal fin are densely covered with numerous oval-shaped, large, white spots. The fins are bright reddish orange. The tips of the caudal fin can be white. The scales are small, thin, and easily fall off. The sideline begins at the upper gill slit, then runs in a high arc above the base of the pectoral fin and then along the middle of the body to the middle of the caudal peduncle. The mouth is strongly protruding (protractile). The upper jaw is shorter than the slightly protruding lower jaw. The jaw and palate are toothless. Also pharyngeal teeth are missing. Compared to other god salmon, Lampris lauta has a relatively long dorsal fin.

  • Fin formula : dorsal I / 54, anal 43, pectoral 25, ventral 18.
