from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard Thomas Lowe (born December 4, 1802 in Derbyshire , † April 13, 1874 at sea near the Isles of Scilly ) was an English clergyman and naturalist . The pronunciation of the name was more [laʊ] than [loʊ] . Its official botanical and zoological author's abbreviation is " Lowe ".

Live and act

Richard Thomas Lowe received his school education in Brewood ( Staffordshire ) and then studied at Christ's College in Cambridge , made here in 1825 the Bachelor and 1831 the Master of Arts ; as a teacher he was particularly impressed by John Stevens Henslow . In 1825 he received the orders and then visited with his mother Madeira , to restore their health. In 1832 he became an Anglican chaplain there (in the course of the continental blockade against Napoleon, Great Britain occupied the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira from 1807 to 1814, and many British settled here, among other things because of the wine export). From 1854 Reverend Lowe worked as Rector in Lea ( Lincolnshire ) and wrote A manual Flora of Madeira and the adjacent islands of Porto Santo and the Desertas (1868). In the course of checking individual problems, he traveled a few more times to Madeira - most recently (with his wife Catherine) on April 13, 1874. However, the (new) steamer "Liberia" got into a severe storm and sank near the dreaded Isles of Scilly, all passengers drowned.

He also wrote A history of the fishes of Madeira (1843-60) as well as a number of individual works with a scientific, including conchyliological content.

A scandal occurred when he founded a new ( traditionalist ) sect as a clergyman .
