Lamprologus lemairii is a cichlid from the tribe of Lamprologini , the endemic in the East African Tanganjikasee occurs. The name of the fish wasdedicated to Charles François Alexandre Lemaire (1863–1925).

features

Lamprologus lemairii reaches a length of 25 cm, with the females remaining about a third smaller. The head is massive and the mouth and eyes are relatively large. Otherwise the body is rather slim. The coloring is made up of irregular light and dark spots, which gives the fish a camouflaging appearance. The dorsal fin is partly almost yellow. Local differences in coloration, as found in many cichlids from Lake Tanganyika , have not yet been found in Lamprologus lemairii .

Way of life

Lamprologus lemairii inhabits both sandy and rocky habitats and seems to prefer a mixture of these. The species occurs from the water surface to a depth of 100 m and feeds primarily on fish . Everything that can be overwhelmed is captured. L. lemairii are solitary ambulance hunters and often lie almost motionless next to or between stones. Movements are carried out slowly, so that their presence is barely noticed by the prey fish and they can be captured as soon as they are within range. Young fish in particular are eaten by L. lemairii . Males usually guard a territory that is inhabited by several females. The animals can only be found together for mating. Like all Lamprologini , L. lemairii is also a substrate spawner . The eggs are laid by the female in a crevice or cave, which the male cannot penetrate due to his size. The eggs are fertilized from the outside by the female creating suction into the cavity. The female guards the 100–150 eggs, after about ten days the fry hatch and are guarded by the female for another ten days until they leave the nest.

Systematics

Lamprologus lemairii has been assigned to the genus Lepidiolamprologus by some authors , but has been returned to the genus Lamprologus on the basis of DNA analyzes and morphological features . According to the latest findings, Neolamprologus caudopunctatus is the sister taxon of Lamprologus lemairii .

threat

The IUCN classifies Lamprologus lemairii as not endangered (“least concern”).
