Lance Allan Ito (born August 2, 1950 ) is an American lawyer and criminal judge . He achieved worldwide fame as the presiding judge in the criminal case against OJ Simpson in 1995.

Life

Ito was born to Japanese-born parents in the state of California was born. He attended John Marshall High School in Los Angeles . After high school , he attended the University of California, Los Angeles in 1972 and received a JD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975 . After graduating, he worked for the Los Angeles prosecutor , particularly in the area of organized crime . In 1987 he was appointed judge by Republican Governor George Deukmejian and in 1989 assigned to the Superior Court of Los Angeles. Ito has been retired since January 2015.

Trial of OJ Simpson

In 1995, he presided over the criminal case against OJ Simpson, which was accompanied with great media interest. His decision to allow the live broadcast on TV was criticized by some process observers. His litigation in general, however, met with broad approval from legal experts.

Private

He has been married to Detective Margaret Ann York since 1981, who has long been one of the most senior women in the Los Angeles Police Department.
