Book cover design of the original edition from 1928

Land of Spring is the only autobiographical work by B. Traven . It was first relocated in 1928. In the appendix to the original edition from 1928, 132 photographs (B / W) of the trip are inserted on 64 pages . On the last page of the appendix there are 7 Mexican coins , all photographs are described, the longest description is a fourteen-liner. The last page shows a fold-out map of Chiapas , this is framed by the maps of North America , South America and Central America . In the later reprint ( paperback edition ) of the Gutenberg Book Guild , images from this appendix were integrated into the text.

The book is not divided into titled chapters, but simply broken down into leaps of thought, which are characterized by the fact that a leading paragraph is inserted on the next page. The new leap in thought is indicated by a number (32 in total) and the first letter of the number is emphasized by enlarging it.

Donkeys were the most common mount in the Chiapas highlands

The book is about a journey of Traven with an Indian companion on donkeys to the highlands of the Mexican state of Chiapas . Traven describes the flora , fauna and geography of the country in great detail , but above all its inhabitants, the indigenous people and their social habits.

San Juan Chamula - Procession of the Tzotzilmayas

The travelogue experiences a special deepening with the humorous consideration of the strongly ritualized religious practices of the only partly Christianized Maya peoples. Traven mentions, for example, that it has happened time and again in the countries he visited that Indians were crucified voluntarily or by force by tribesmen in order to collectively free themselves from sins through crucifixion .

The author describes in great detail the customs, rituals , costumes and the religion of the Tzotzilmayas who settle in the Chamula area. The special features of the Tzotzil language are also described in a short section.

In this book, Traven also puts forward the theory that the origin of mankind was to be found in Mexico .
