The Landauer Tor in Lauterbourg in Alsace goes back to a high medieval fortress and was converted into a city guards house in 1706. The Landau Gate is protected as a monument ( Monument historique ).

The structure was built as a fortress tower in the middle of the 13th century together with the other fortress structures in the city and served as a lower tower to defend the eastern access to the city. A room for the tower guard was set up as early as 1615 . The actual tower was demolished in 1706 along with most of the other city towers, and the current building was erected on its base as a city guards house. To the east, the former coat of arms of France adorned the building, which was replaced in 1792 by a sun figure, the heraldic symbol of Louis XIV , of which fragments have survived. From 1978 to 1985 the building was renovated.
